It’s not about the day, it’s about the celebration.

So, I am aware that Fathers Day was a week ago, but between a sick princess, over time for hubby and a rough end of the week we didn’t get the chance to celebrate our Fathers Day until today. I learned early on in my marriage that it doesn’t matter what day you celebrate on, just as long as it is special when you do. After 7 years, this last year was the first time we spent 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas together. We have never celebrated birthdays on actual birthdays because we are never all together. Again, it doesn’t matter what day, just make it special.

This post will be about what the kids and I did for the fathers closest to us.

For my father-in-law, papa to his grand kids, I got my idea from this picture. He loves to fish, and I know that if we lived closer to them he would take his grandkid’s fishing with him. I am aware that that is just a picture. I tried to trace it back through the mass that is Pinterest and I couldn’t find the original post. This is what my kids and I did.

Since I wasn’t able to find the original post of ‘how to’ I will give you MY ‘how to’ on this  Hooked on Papa canvas.

Things you will need

1. Canvas of any size
2. Paintbrushes
3. Acrylic Paint
4. Paper plate
5. Wipes or rags to wipe pain of of children’s hands and feet
6. A childs foot
7. A child’s hand

After collecting all of the supplies it came down to deciding which child would be the fishing pole and which would be the fish. They bickered about it for awhile but eventually it came down to the size of canvas I had and the fact that the fire fighters feet are big… So he was the fish and the princess was the pole.

I found that putting the pain on a paper plate made it easier to get little feet and hands covered and then on the canvas cleanly.

 

 

 

 

 

After the hand and foot prints were on and dry I added the other details of the picture and we ended up with this

For my dad, granddad I used shutterfly and made him a photo book. I used the we heart grandparents from this selection. My dads birthday happens to be around Fathers Day, so I used this as a combination gift for both. We were actually able to facetime with him when he opened it so that the kids(ok I wanted to see it as well) could see his reaction.

Now, for my wonderful husband. In past years I have always had the kids give him cards but this year I wanted to do something different. Something that he would actually enjoy. So, I started to look around and I found this. Now, those are all great ideas but not really for my hubby. So, I took the golf day box idea and put a spin on it so that my husband would enjoy it. The kids and I gave him a shooting day box.

Things you will need.

1. Some kind of box. I used the bottom half of a cookie container from the grocery store.
2. A filler. I used pieces of red streamers from the $1 store
3. Bullets(you chose the caliber. Make sure it fits the type of gun he shoots…)
4. Ear plugs. If he only has the cheap foam ones maybe upgrade him to a nicer pair.
5. Some kind of snack food. I splurged and got him his favorite jerky
6. Then I did a target print out and a little(cheesy) note

This was another one that I used my kids for… The fire fighter had a lot of fun cutting the streamers up and the princess had fun ripping the paper to fill the box. Next I printed off the note and target. Then I put it all together and I got this

Today we celebrated in a couple ways. Our morning started with me going and getting us donuts and hubby and I coffee. Then we presented the gift. After he had oohed and awed over it for the right amount of time we did things the kids wanted to. The princess and I put puzzles together, rolled a ball back and forth and then while I was doing laundry she convinced daddy to build her a princess tower out of brothers blocks. Daddy and the fire fighter wrestled and played with hot wheels. The plan was to go for a family bike ride/walk but the weather didn’t look the best so the princess and I got some cupcake makings at the store and we finished our day with devil foods cupcakes with fresh raspberry cream cheese frosting. YUMMY.
