A 5yr old that loves fire

I knew before I got married that I would be in the EMS(emergency medical services) family for life.  That is what happens when you marry someone who has poured his life into this field and it is in his blood. I love being part of the EMS family.  There is no other family that supports like they do or understands the life you live everyday.  What they don’t prepare you for is the fact that your son will never grow out of loving fire.  They always say it is just a phase.  Yeah, well this phase has lasted for 5 years and there isn’t any sign of it going away. So, I am choosing to embrace it.  All of that is what led to his desire for a firefighter themed 5th birthday.Jordanturns5collage

I honestly looked forward to it.  I was a little worried about the cake because as of yet, I haven’t  figured out how to make red frosting naturally.  I knew that if I didn’t somehow pull this off I would be disappointing my little fire fighter.  So, I set out.  Now you wouldn’t think it would be that hard to find fire fighter party stuff.  Well, you would be wrong.  I looked everywhere.  I finally found some at the party store here in town.

But, I still had the problem of making a fire cake.

Well, this is what I came up with… Now, the checkered cake looks a lot more complicated then it actually is.  I followed this http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/celebs/9402_Buddy_s_Checkerboard_Cake/index.html to accomplish the checkered board look.051 (2)

When it came to the frosting I used my standard cream cheese frosting.  For the black I added charcoal a little at a time until I got the color that I wanted.  Be careful with this because it can and will turn everything it touches black.

For the yellow I used turmeric.  Be careful with this coloring.  If you add to much you will get a funny after taste.

The ‘flames’ and smoke were me having fun with a tooth pick.  022 (3)The finishing touches were the candles and the birthday boy’s grin as he blew them out.047 (2)Hard to believe my little 6lb nothing baby boy that put me through 29 hrs of absolute fear and stress is now a big almost 40lb 5 yr old.  I love him now more then I did when I held him for the first time.  Happy birthday my little fire fighter!
